Maurizio Zanella is widely regarded as an innovator in the Italian wine industry and one of the few producers to introduce the Italian oenological renaissance. A refreshing sense of originality has won him the respect of colleagues, wine critics and connoisseurs alike.
A prodigy, Maurizio Zanella began handcrafting wines while living at his parents' estate in Franciacorta. Eventually his passion led him to studies at the renowned Centre Oenologique de Bourgogne. Upon return, he decided to build a state-of-the-art winery at their summer home, and began assembling a group of the most sought-after cellar masters in the world. The Ca' del Bosco winery is now the most sophisticated producer of wines in Franciacorta and, through a multi-million dollar capital investment, soon to be one of the most sophisticated in the world.
Maurizio is leading an initiative to distinguish the still wines of the region from its world-famous DOCG sparkling wines. The sparkling wines are officially recognized according to European law by the place name "Franciacorta." the signature still wines will now be referred to as "Curtefranca," dating back to 1277 when the area was called "Franchae Curtes" or "Free Borough." This unprecedented initiative has been adopted and endorsed by 80% of the region's wine producers, in the hopes that this designation will be adopted one day as the official denomination. It will replace the existing designation "Terre di Franciacorta."'
